We’re getting a “Horror Fright” here in Dubuque soon. I’m excited but my wallet keeps hiding under the bed.
This is a decent looking jack but I don’t see them lasting 20+ years or being easily rebuildable like a midrange Crapsman. I could be, and am often wrong though

Horror Fright jacks are actually pretty good!

I have this one, and like it, though I do wish it had another inch or two of lift in it.

+1 for Harbor Frieght jacks. I have the low profile 2.5 ton jack and I’ve used it to lift my old Dakota a couple times as well as constantly raising and lowering my miata. Works like a champ.

That’s the one I have! It’s really awesome. I think HF discontinued it tho :(

I want to snag one to check it out. I’m not brand loyal by any means. I have some HF stuff that really shocked me at how good it is.

Using the factory jack points, this jack wouldn’t get either the Niva or MJ’s wheels off the ground. I’m not even positive it would contact the jack points...

I would spring for at least a 2 ton for regular cars and more (5k or 6k) for large cars or trucks. But $60 is OK for 3k pounds. Nice NAPA ones are more money but coupons are not rare. But hey, it is your body under there.

Since you are never lifting all the car at once, this should be fine for small and mid-sized cars, though I can’t criticize anyone for wanting to have some safety margin. My car is a hair under 3000 lbs so I feel ok with it regardless.

When I jack up my car by the front jack point on the frame rail, 3 wheels eventually end up in the air. If I do the center jack point, only the front 2. So at most it’s 75% of the weight of the car. Even with that, it’s supported the car fine. I wouldn’t ever go under the car with just a jack holding it up, that’s what stands are for.

It’s a low profile jack for cars that are low to the ground. With the adapter for my BMW jack points, the jack pad is maybe an inch below the jack point. That’s what it’s for.

FYI you can find coupons for this fairly often in MotorTrend or Car and Driver magazines. $60 is still the lowest I have seen it though.
I ended up buying one not too long ago. I was going to buy a small trolley jack, as that is what I had before. It was $30. Getting this for $60 was almost a no brainer. The large support and easy pumping easily makes this jack worth the money.
I do wish it had a higher lifting height. For that you have to get one of the beefier jacks, that hold more weight. They are also double the price.
At the end of the day, if your car is under 3000 pounds and you work on your car frequently, don’t hesitate to buy this.

You can use it on a car that’s more than 3000 lbs. You’re never going to be supporting the full weight of the car with the jack. Even on a car like mine where 3 wheels go up in the air when I use one of the side jack points along the frame rails, there’s still a wheel on the ground supporting some of the car’s weight.
